FRIENDS ON FILM: PART 1

I’ve unofficially decided that I’m going to do a photo series this summer of some friends shot on film and no I don’t mean movie film. I mean regular ol’ picture film, you know the kind you shoot with your senses and not a screen, that stuff you’re always anxious to get back from the lab because you have no idea what kind of photos you took. Yeah that stuff. I extra like film.

I’m not going to lie, I have no direction or ideas of what I actually want to do with this other than capture a few frames of some good friends.  I always feel like I never have enough time to see certain people because as we all know, life gets busy, we’re busy, people are busy but heck, I want to hang out with you damn it! If I also get to capture a few frames of your lovely face then bonus!  If not then you can still use the photo of your cat as your Facebook profile photo, no one will judge. So if we haven’t hung out in a while or if you just want to eat sushi or Korean food with me, leave me a message!

Anyway, here’s my friend Erin, her backyard and some school in her neighbourhood. She’s hilarious and an amazing hip hop dancer. And she loves sushi – automatic friends there :)

I know I know, I’ve been really slacking on my updates. I’ve heard about it from more than a few people and I’m sorry! But I’m here now and I have some exciting news!

Back in February I was invited by Amazing Adventures Ltd. to teach a photography workshop in beautiful Costa Rica. It was such an incredible opportunity because it allowed me to do the two things I love the most, travel and photography. However, I think the absolute best part of it all was that I was with such a wonderful and funny group of people. We all shared the same love for photography so we were never rushed or told to “hurry up and take the photo” (one of my biggest pet peeves). It was also great to be able to teach among other great instructors, Martin Ingles and Devon Daviau. The support and camaraderie among our group was really what made the trip special. I’m going to do another post with some behind the scenes photos and photos of all the wonderful people on the trip. Definitely some funny photos there! I think the teacher in me really loved the whole thing because it’s always amazing to see your students progress and improve in any form of learning. Everyone’s skill level was different but we were all able to learn at our own pace. I loved seeing everyone’s faces when they got the shot or when they saw photo they couldn’t believe they took. It’s one thing to sit in a classroom and learn about concepts and ideas but it’s another thing to have your ‘aha’ moment and then clicking the shutter to create the kind of photo you always wanted. Being able to have this moment while standing in the rain forest in Costa Rica staring up at a volcano is just a bonus :)

Now for the exciting news! For those who want to take their photography skills to the next level and are up for some adventure, I’m excited to announce…

Amazing Adventures Ltd. has opened spots for Costa Rica August 18-25, 2013!

Seriously, lose the books and skip out on sitting in your house watching YouTube videos all day. That’s boring! Think about it, how many times have you had to read the same instructional line about apertures and shutter speeds but just can’t seem to wrap your head around it? We’re photographers, we’re visual people. You can’t just sit there and read a book and expect to know how to do it without seeing the fruits of your own labour.  Trust me when I say you’ll learn so much more from this trip because you’ll be able to learn the techniques while actually being able to apply them. And the best part is you can take the time to make the mistakes and learn from them.

So if you’re interested in joining me August 18-25, 2013 for some amazing wildlife photography, model photoshoots, spectacular landscapes, rain forest zip lining and some good laughs along the way please visit Amazing Adventures Ltd. at http://www.amazingadventuresltd.com for full details. I’ve also been informed that there will be special pricing of $500 off for any early bookings! Prices are all inclusive (flight, accommodations, meals, tours and lessons). Now until June 15th, packages are:

Special price:

Single Occupancy $3,100 (Reg. $3,600)
Double Occupancy $2,700 (Reg. $3,200)

For any inquiries, feel free to contact me or email Amazing Adventures Ltd. at amazingadventuresltd@gmail.com. This will surely be a trip you won’t forget! Hope to see you there!

Now on to the photos! Here are some of my favourite shots taken from the trip in February. A mixture of film and digital. I honestly hate having to carry so many camera bodies around but man do I love my film! Can you guess which was shot on what? ;)
