On Beyond Zen – 365 Mini-set

March 25th, 2010

Finally got caught up in these! I’ve really been trying to keep up with this 365 project, it’s a lot harder than it sounds. Taking a picture everyday is not hard, creating a photo and then finding time to writing something jazzy about it is. Anyhoo, as part of the 365 I decided to do [...]

Finally got caught up in these! I’ve really been trying to keep up with this 365 project, it’s a lot harder than it sounds. Taking a picture everyday is not hard, creating a photo and then finding time to writing something jazzy about it is. Anyhoo, as part of the 365 I decided to do mini-sets within it to keep things interesting and challenging for myself. This first one was inspired by the Dr. Seuss book, On Beyond Zebra (it’s a great book, you should check it out!) Like I’ve said before, with all this teaching of young children, I’ve really come to love children’s books. Even as an adult, you can really learn a lot from them! So this set is a little of my ‘school teacher’ side coming out. Also, I should probably mention this as some folks were asking why I was doing odd hand gestures in all of them. Each picture represents a letter of the alphabet and is shown in sign language. Shout outs to Shobson for the great idea of doing ASL in the photos.

If you have any ideas for the next mini-set, let me know! Leave a comment or drop me a line! Enjoy the photos!

12th Annual CAISA Fashion Show

Ok so trying to complete lessons plans for my kindergarten class, finish the massive 365 update, and complete the rest of my main website in one day was a little ambitious. Ok so trying to complete lessons plans for my kindergarten class, finish the massive 365 update, and complete the rest of my main website in one day was a little ambitious. So those will have to wait, sorry! However, the new site launch date will now officially be Sunday March 28th. I really hate rushing things and would rather spend the extra time to make it right so this posting will have to do! I also won’t be at my computer this weekend so Sunday it is. On to the big news about this weekend!

Back when I attend the University of Western Ontario, I was a choreographer for an annual charity fashion/dance show. In association with the Western, the Canada Asian International Students Association (CAISA) put on a colourful and high energy show every year and all proceeds went to the Children’s Health Foundation in London. It really was a great event to be a part of. As the years went on, the show got bigger and better and continued to raise more for the Children’s Health Foundation. Even with the long practices and exhaustion from dancing, it was a time of year I always looked forward to. Not only was it for a good cause but I got to do what I loved and made a lot of good friends along the way. Anyway, 4 years since graduating, I’m happy to once again be a part of the show. I could only wish I was dancing in it again but this time there was a little less dancing and a little more photographing.

This year I had the privilege of shooting the photos for the program. Now this isn’t like your regular ol’ piece of paper program you get when attending a school production. There’s some serious snazz happening here! It’s a glossy, full colour, mulit-page piece of work displaying some of Western’s finest pupils in the latest fashion pieces. It even smells like a magazine…I love that smell of new magazine! Anyway, it was a crazy two weekends in January, where I shot over 50 models and a whole lot of frames. I’ll be attending the show this Saturday and seeing the final product for the first time! The  sold out show is expecting 1200 people so I am quite excited! I’m excited to go back to Western, to see the show and to smell that program cover! :)

Check out the posters and rave cards that have posted around Western and London to promote the show. These final images are a little different from my final submitted images so I’ll post those later along with a few other images from the shoots.

Way better than a 365 posting! Of all the exciting things happening right now, I’d have to say the most exciting has been the recent arrival of my niece! As a first time aunt, I didn’t realize how excited I would be! I took a quick break from the 365 project to capture something way more interesting and precious. Cali is amazing and indescribably cute, I just want to put her in my pocket! Congratulations to the my brother and Mandy! They’re going to be great parents!

Welcome to the new official blog of Navy Nhum Photography! Thank you for being patient with me during the site reconstruction. As you may have noticed there’s been a complete overhaul of this site and my official site will see the same (new site up March 24th). Just a quick backstory behind the changes. I figured it was time to really consider where I wanted to go with my photography and think about my long term goals, including marketing and branding.

As much as I loved dTour Photography, where it came from and what it represented, I decided it was time for a change. What better way to promote my work and myself than to use my own name. To be honest though, I had some concerns about it considering it’s uniqueness, spelling and pronounciation but then again that’s what makes me, and my name, different. And for those just tuning in, it’s pronounced Navi. I now have the movie Avatar to reference, or rather the movie references me :) I  like to think my images and photography style reflects much of who I am – creative, unconventional, spontaneous, and some times a little random – so it was only right that I would use a name that would best represent me. It also helps with the issue of photo and photographer association. Oh and I also wanted snazzy new business cards! So in a nutshell, that’s reason for the revamp.

Never fear though, you can still expect to see awesome photos and read about upcoming projects and current adventures! And yes I am still continuing with my 365 project! I haven’t been able to post but I’ve still be keeping up with the photos, which has not been an easy task. Although I’m not gonna lie, I have had to make up for 4 missed days :(  Also, I was unfortunately unable to maintain all the previous posts from the last blog so everything will be brand spankin’ new! I will do a massive 365 project image post tomorrow with everything starting at A to what will be W tomorrow. All other previous entries will have to be re-posted as I go along. I also have some exciting news about this weekend!
