Long weekend happenings

Ahhh yes summer is upon us, patios are open, shorts are out and that ever so exciting sound that tells you summer is here – the ice cream truck. Hope everyone had a great long weekend! Weather was perfect and my pants were just loose enough for all the BBQs :) Here are a few snapshots of the happenings of my May 2-4 weekend. Filled with eating, jumping, people watching and photo taking!

I first hit up Toronto to meet up with my friend Courtney who just got her first DSLR. We went out for some awesome Korean food (of which I got too excited to eat and didn’t take one photo) and then I gave her a quick photography 101 lesson. Then we met up with my friend Lauren and the 3 of us just strolled along, taking in interesting sites and people. Too bad my parking meter ran out before I could do some more street photography.

Then on Sunday, I hit up Innisfil beach with my crazy friends Kara and Lisa and made them jump in cold water while looking ridiculous in their hoodies haha (the hoodies were for an upcoming project I’m working on). I love these guys, they’re the craziest ladies I know and I like to show it by giving them loving head pushes ;)

The rest of the long weekend was filled with lots of food and family. I went to my cousin’s place for a birthday bbq and a friendly game of backyard badminton. I would just like to note that I came in 2nd in the regional badminton tournament way back when and by the looks of my game on Sunday, there was a reason I was 2nd and not 1st. I think on Monday I spent a good 6hrs eating. Seriously, I sat there munching all day and the most exercise I did was going from backyard to frontyard then to Dairy Queen. I love summer! :)

Here’s my hommage to the cool Saturday Night Live photos! My friend Khalil and I were just playing around in the studio when he took these shots. Then my friend Louise pointed out that the first shot looked like it could be one of those SNL bumpers so I thought I’d try it out! With a little editing, here’s what I got. Whatcha think? :) I’ve always admired the photos and commercial bumpers on Saturday Night Live. The images were always so interesting and different with each guest and more often than not, the photos were fun and quirky and shows a little more of the celebrities personalities.

There’s quite a unique process during both the photoshoot and post processing. In a recent issue of the magazine Digital Photo Pro, SNL photographer Mary Ellen Matthews did an interview where she briefly went through the process of shooting the bumpers for each show. She doesn’t have much time as she obviously needs to do them every week and moves quite quickly s, sometimes even shooting during rehearsals. I often wondered about the post processing that went into the images and what the original might have looked like so I went searching to find some before photos.

It was actually a little difficult to find original versions of the images from SNL but I did find some of Megan Fox. Here’s a before and after. (Maybe this wasn’t the best example as I am clearly no Megan Fox haha)

I can’t imagine how amazing it would be to be the official photographer for Saturday Night Live and going through that hustle and bustle every week. I just love her work! Her creativity and style made the in-between commercial break time a little more bearable for me. Even if the show was bad, at least the guests had a snazzy photo to briefly distract the viewers from the lack of humour. Check out more of Mary Ellen Matthews amazing work at Jed Root Inc.!

NNP: Monday Night Rawl

May 20th, 2010

I did a shoot recently with local recording artist Rawl Grant and was happy I didn’t have to go all the way down to Toronto for studio space. I finally found a local studio in Newmarket, which is owned by local photographer Nicole Dee Simmen. It’s nice to know that I have somewhere to go [...]

I did a shoot recently with local recording artist Rawl Grant and was happy I didn’t have to go all the way down to Toronto for studio space. I finally found a local studio in Newmarket, which is owned by local photographer Nicole Dee Simmen. It’s nice to know that I have somewhere to go for any local indoor shoots. I love the idea of possibly having my own studio one day but I’m not sure how much I would actually use it as I love shooting outdoors and working in natural light. Although, winter outdoor shooting just isn’t as fun as shooting this time of year haha. Here are some shots from the shoot and thanks to Nicole for the sweet behind-the-scene photos! Check it!

P.S. For anyone familiar with wrestling, that’s a clever title right? Haha…although this was shot during the day but still a snazzy title :)

Quick post to share my excitement about my new lens! I’ve been eyeing the 24-70 for awhile and I finally picked it up on Tuesday. I had a great lens before but this one suits my shooting style a little more. The lens renders outstanding image quality and is amazingly sharp. I’m really excited to be shooting with this! My bf and I decided to go test out the lens while scouting for some potential shoot locations. He got to be the first model for the lens haha. Check out photos of my new splurge and the first photos taken with it!
